Zanzibar works year-round, but the year isn't flat: the seasons swing between two monsoons — Kaskazi and Kusi — and each month has its own weather, fruit and quiet or busy stretch of the calendar. The sun rises around 6:15 AM and sets around 6:30 PM all year, near-equal daylight whichever month you land in. Here's what to expect, month by month.
January

Hot and sunny (30–32°C) with occasional showers; dolphins are often seen near Kizimkazi, mangoes and jackfruit are in season, and it's high season as visitors escape the European winter.
February

Very warm, sunny and dry (29–33°C) — a strong beach month, watermelons and mangoes ripen, and it's peak season for honeymoons.
March

Still hot with rising humidity (28–31°C) and the first pre-rain showers; good marine visibility before the rains arrive, frangipani in bloom, and fewer crowds than the peak months.
April

The long rains begin — heavy showers, often at night (27–30°C) — the quietest, lowest-priced month of the year, with the greenest gardens but less marine-life visibility.
May

Rain continues but eases later in the month (26–29°C); this is when Matlai usually closes for part of the month — check the dates for your travel year before booking.
June

Dry and cooler (27–29°C) with fresh ocean breezes — a good month for dolphins and diving, and the start of high season by month's end.
July

Pleasant, dry and breezy (24–27°C); turtle nesting season, dolphins common, and European school-holiday high season.
August

Clear skies and cool evenings (24–27°C), still peak season, with occasional whale sightings in the deeper channels.
September

Warm and calm (25–28°C) with excellent swimming and snorkelling visibility — one of the best all-round months, slightly quieter than August.
October

Warming up again (27–31°C) with short rains late in the month; a good month for chameleons and birdwatching, and a peaceful, medium-season stretch.
November

Short rains begin, usually brief (28–32°C); everything greens up again, and it's a quiet, pleasant month for nature-focused travel.
December

Warm and sunny with some light showers (28–32°C) — mangoes and pineapples are back, and it's peak season around Christmas and New Year.
Best Months For...
- Diving and snorkelling visibility: June through September, when the sea is calmest and clearest.
- Avoiding crowds and lower rates: April, or the first half of May before the hotel's usual yearly closure.
- Dolphins near Kizimkazi: reported most often December through March, and again from June.
- A honeymoon: February and August are the busiest honeymoon months here, but any dry-season month works.
The two seasons behind all of this are the Kaskazi monsoon (roughly November–March, warmer and more humid) and the Kusi monsoon (roughly June–October, drier and breezier) — the short and long rains sit between them, in April–June and again briefly in November.
Whichever month suits your plans, book your stay and we'll help you make the most of it.
