Experiences at Matlai
The short answer
The tide writes the schedule.
Days at Matlai run on the tide, not a programme: at low water you walk 5–10 minutes across the sand flat toward the Mchanga sandbank; at high water you swim off the beach in front of the villas or take one of the 2 free kayaks. Around that rhythm your butler arranges everything else — ngalawa sunset sails, snorkelling boats, beach dinners, the open-air cinema — with one WhatsApp message.

From the door to the sandbank
Up through the palms, out to the sand
One continuous flight, at your own pace: the canopy, the treetops, the reef going pale where it shallows, and the sandbank the tide uncovers. Scroll it.

The lagoon
The sandbank, two ways
At low tide, the sea in front of the hotel folds back and leaves a walkable flat — 5–10 minutes to the water's edge, then a short swim across the channel to the Mchanga sandbank. The current in the channel follows the moon, strongest at full and new moon; your butler shows you where to enter, and tide tables hang in every room.
At high tide the sandbank sinks and the lagoon becomes the pool: swim off the beach, or paddle out on the free kayaks. Rare among east-coast beaches, a deeper channel here keeps swimming water even at the lowest tide.
Evenings
After the sun goes
The ngalawa — the local fishermen's wooden outrigger canoe — sails from the hotel beach around the tip of the peninsula for sunset on the western side. Back on land, evenings are lanterns in the sand: a private candlelight dinner from Zatiny's kitchens, or the open-air cinema — around 300 films under the stars, often paired with dinner, set up by your butler.
For the quietest hour of all, Bustani Spa's herbal bath at dusk is the house ritual.

On the water
Boats from the village
The boats here belong to captains from Michamvi village, and the butler's job is matching you to the right one. Snorkellers choose between the lagoon in front, Blue Lagoon — 15–20 minutes south by local boat, the best reef nearby — and Starfish Beach, 10–15 minutes north, a shallow sandy seabed scattered with large starfish (about 2–2.5 hours all in). Deep-sea fishing runs as half- or full-day charters.
For a full day at sea, the Private Ocean Retreat (USD 300 per couple) sails the Menai Marine Reserve in the island's southwest — the far, wilder side of Zanzibar's water.
Beyond the beach
Day trips, honestly rated
Stone Town is the one we always recommend — about 1 hour 15 minutes by private car, and worth a full day for the old town's carved doors, the market and the food. Jozani Forest, Zanzibar's only national park (50 km²), is 40–45 minutes away and the reliable place to see the endemic red colobus monkey up close.
The spice farm tour (about an hour's drive, 3–4 hours) is genuinely educational — and openly touristic, with singing guides and woven souvenirs; go for the scents, not for solitude. Kitesurfers head to Paje, 20 minutes south, where the schools are; we make the introduction rather than pretend to teach it ourselves. And the neat rows you'll see at low tide are seaweed farms — worked mostly by the village's women, a piece of living east-coast culture right in front of the hotel.
Good to know
Experiences — questions guests ask
Nothing here needs booking before you arrive. The pattern that works: land, let the butler walk you through the tide table for your week, and pin the two or three fixed points — a boat morning, a spa evening, a Stone Town day — around the hours the lagoon gives you.
What is free, and what costs extra?
The beach in front of the hotel, both villa pools, the 2 kayaks and borrowed beach shoes are free for guests, and half board covers breakfast and dinner. Charged extras include the open-air cinema, floating breakfast, private dinners on the beach, spa treatments and all boat trips and excursions — your butler quotes each before booking.
How do we book an experience?
One WhatsApp message to your butler. Boat trips run with local captains from the village, so a day's notice is ideal; the cinema and beach dinners can usually be set up the same day.
Is the swim to the sandbank safe?
It's a short swim across a channel, and the current depends on the moon — strongest around full and new moon, when the tide pulls furthest out, but it does not pull out to sea. Your butler explains the route and entry point, and tide tables are in every room and at the beach entrance.
When is the best tide for what?
Low tide uncovers the walk toward the sandbank and the seaweed farms; high tide is for swimming off the beach and kayaking. The tide shifts about an hour a day, so over a week you get every combination — the tide table in your room is the real activity planner.
Do you offer diving or kitesurfing?
Not ourselves — and we say so plainly. We refer divers to trusted local operators, and kitesurfers to the schools in Paje, about 20 minutes south, the east coast's kite beach.
Can you arrange a Tanzania safari?
We advise on the mainland connection — the flight from Zanzibar to Arusha takes about 45 minutes by jet, longer on the small safari planes — and many guests pair 4–6 nights here with the northern circuit. We don't sell safari packages ourselves; we help you plan the route and handle the Zanzibar end.
“We walked to a sandbank in the morning, sailed a fisherman's canoe at sunset, and watched a film under the stars the same night — without leaving the hotel once.”
