Golden light over the beach at Michamvi Pingwe — the Matlai wedding setting

Honeymoon Guide

Destination Wedding in Zanzibar

The short answer

Small, legal, and entirely yours.

A Zanzibar wedding at Boutique Hotel Matlai is deliberately small: barefoot beach or garden ceremonies for elopements up to 12 overnight guests, with Castaway Weddings — one of the island's most experienced planners — handling the legal paperwork and styling, and our six-room house hosting one celebration at a time. The honeymoon starts the same evening, in the same villa.

How it works

The ceremony, the law, and the house

The setting. The beach in front of the villas at golden hour, or the tropical garden under the palms — styled from simple-and-elegant to fully dressed with flowers, always tailored, never templated. Because the property holds only six rooms, a full buy-out turns Matlai into a private wedding estate: both villas, both pools, the restaurant and the sand, exclusively yours.

The paperwork. Legal marriage in Zanzibar has real requirements, and this is where our partnership with Castaway Weddings earns its place: documentation, ceremony setup, flowers, décor and on-the-day coordination are theirs; you arrive with your documents and your person, and everything else is already standing on the sand.

The house. Our team runs everything around the ceremony — the rooms, the wedding dinner from Zatiny's two kitchens, couples treatments at Bustani Spa, the floating breakfast that opens the first married morning. Wedding flows into honeymoon without a suitcase moving: same villa, new chapter.

Planning the day

Timelines, guests and the golden hour

The ceremony hour picks itself: late afternoon into golden light, timed against the tide so the water performs behind the vows — spring-tide weeks stage the ceremony against the dramatic wide flats, neap weeks keep the sea close and calm. June through October gives the driest certainty for a beach ceremony; January and February trade a little humidity for glassy evening water. We hold one celebration at a time, so your date is yours alone the moment it's confirmed.

Guest logistics stay boutique-simple: up to 12 overnight guests across the six rooms (18 with extra beds), day guests joining for the ceremony and dinner by arrangement, and the whole property bookable as the wedding estate — couples' wing at Kidosho, families at Asili, the long table in the garden for the feast from both kitchens. Paperwork runs ahead of you: our planning partner confirms the document list for your nationalities (passports, birth certificates, any divorce or name-change papers) weeks before you fly, so the legal quarter-hour is a formality between the flowers and the first toast. Book the date 6–12 months out; the honeymoon starts the same evening without a single suitcase moving.

After the vows

The first married week, pre-built

The wedding's end is the honeymoon's soft launch: the floating breakfast next morning, the couples ritual at Bustani mid-week, the private dinner re-staged just for two on the same sand — and the guests' departure leaving the house progressively quieter around you. Couples who buy out the property often keep it one extra night after the party leaves; the silence that follows a celebration is its own ceremony.

In practice

Paperwork, planners and what we actually do

The clearest thing we can tell you is what we are not: we host weddings, we do not organise them. The beach, the setting, the kitchens, the rooms and the staff are ours; the planning, the legal paperwork and the supplier coordination belong with experienced local planners we work alongside regularly. Couples who understand that split early get a far better wedding than couples who assume the hotel is also the planner.

On the legal side, a wedding that is legally binding in Tanzania involves documentation and lead time, which is why a large share of couples marry at home and hold the ceremony here as a celebration or blessing — simpler, faster, and identical in every way that shows up in the photographs. A planner will tell you exactly which route suits your nationality and timeline; we will tell you honestly that the two look the same from the sand.

Practically, the property holds six rooms across two villas for up to twelve guests (eighteen with extra beds), which sets the natural scale: intimate ceremonies rather than large parties. Full buy-outs are the usual arrangement so the day belongs entirely to one group, and the same kitchens that run half board handle the dinner. The most-booked shape is a ceremony at the tide line in late afternoon, dinner in the sand with lanterns, and a floating breakfast the next morning — which is less a package than the obvious use of what is already here.

Budget honestly for the parts that are not the venue: a planner's fee, the officiant or celebrant, flowers and décor beyond what the house already has, photography, and any guests' rooms. A small Zanzibar ceremony is genuinely less expensive than the European equivalent, but the saving comes from scale rather than from things being free.

Good to know

Questions travellers ask

Wedding planning abroad runs on trust — so here is exactly how it works at Matlai, including the parts other venues gloss over.

Can foreigners legally marry in Zanzibar?

Yes — with the right paperwork, handled properly. We work with Castaway Weddings, one of Zanzibar's most experienced destination-wedding planners, who manage the legal requirements and documentation end to end, so the ceremony you have on the sand is also the marriage you take home.

How big can a wedding at Matlai be?

Deliberately small. Six rooms hold up to 12 overnight guests, and full-property buy-outs turn the two villas, both pools and the beach into a private wedding estate. We host one celebration at a time — no parallel events, ever.

What do the ceremonies look like?

Barefoot on the beach at the water's edge, or in the tropical garden under the palms — from a two-person elopement to a sunset ceremony with your closest people, ending at a lantern-lit dinner from Zatiny's kitchens in the sand.

When is the best season to marry here?

June–October for dry-season certainty and golden evening light; January–February for warm, still air and a glassy sea. We steer couples away from April–May, the long rains, and we'll say so plainly if your preferred date falls there.

Who plans the details?

Castaway Weddings coordinates the ceremony — legalities, styling, flowers, on-the-day management — while our own team runs the house: rooms, dinners, spa, surprises. You arrive with documents and leave married; the machinery stays invisible.

And the honeymoon?

It starts the moment the ceremony ends, with zero transfers: the same villa, the floating breakfast the next morning, couples rituals at Bustani Spa, and a week of tide-paced quiet. Wedding and honeymoon in one place is Matlai's strongest argument.

Can we bring our own photographer or celebrant?

Absolutely — flown-in photographers and celebrants join seamlessly, and our planning partner briefs them on the light, the tide window and the timeline. If you'd rather source locally, the island's best wedding photographers are on our shortlist and book through the same conversation.

What does a Matlai wedding roughly cost?

Honestly variable: an elopement for two runs modestly above a fine private dinner; a full-property wedding weekend prices as a buyout plus the ceremony layer. Send guest count and date and the same-day reply itemizes it — no package grid, because no two weddings here have matched yet.

I've stood at the edge of every wedding this beach has hosted — the small ones, honestly, are the ones nobody forgets.
