The route leaves the airport heading south-east, skirts Zanzibar Town's traffic (the variable that decides your 15-minute spread), then settles into the island's interior — villages, banana palms, school runs — before threading the Jozani Forest corridor, where red colobus monkeys sit in the roadside trees often enough that drivers slow down on instinct. At the east coast the road turns north up the peninsula, and the last kilometres run quiet and unlit to the gate.
The road is paved the whole way but narrow in stretches — this is a drive to hand to a local driver, not a rental-car adventure after a red-eye. Fixed-price local taxis exist and there is no Uber on Zanzibar; everything reliable is pre-arranged, which is why we simply arrange it.

The paperwork is friendlier online: Zanzibar's visa runs US$50 single-entry (US$100 for US citizens), valid up to three months, and applying before you fly skips the airport queue that eats an hour of holiday. Cash-wise, USD notes and cards both work at the hotel (Visa and Mastercard, no Amex), and small-denomination dollars help for tips along the way — coins are useless here, notes only.
If you want data before the WiFi hug at the villa, the airport sells local SIMs — Tigo performs best on the east coast, a fact your driver will confirm with his own phone. Then the practical rhythm: driver holds your name at arrivals, luggage loads, the Jozani corridor rolls past (monkeys optional), and the guest phone with your butler's WhatsApp is in your hand by check-in — which happens in your room, from 14:00, with a cold welcome drink doing the paperwork's small talk.
The return leg
Departure day, engineered gently
Check-out is 10:30, but departure day rarely ends there: luggage waits in the office, the beach and pools stay yours, and a day-use shower before the evening flight is arranged whenever the calendar allows. The drive back mirrors the arrival — allow the same 1h15–1h30 plus airport buffer — and evening-flight guests often fold Stone Town into the route: checkout, old town, dinner near the port, terminal. The last stretch is village road: children walking home, bicycles, the occasional cow with right of way. The pace is part of the arrival rather than an obstacle to it.
The mechanics: USD 60 per car for up to six people, paid to the driver directly or by card at the hotel on the transfer company's own card machine, and arranged with your flight details in advance. Your driver waits outside the arrivals hall with a sign carrying your name and the hotel's. The road is fine, but Zanzibar's airport is slow at peak departure hours and the queue for security is unpredictable.
