Hotel & Accommodation

The Everyday Extras Included in a Matlai Stay

A Matlai stay includes the obvious things — free water, a good breakfast, a butler who learns your name on day one. It also includes a handful of smaller touches that don't show up on the room description. Here is what those actually are.

butler serves welcome drinks

Welcome Cocktail

You'll be handed a drink on arrival, built to show off Matlai's own character rather than a generic cocktail-menu pour. It's usually made around fresh coconut water, so it works with or without the alcohol.

morning yoga with sea view

Yoga Mats and Dumbbells

Every room comes with a yoga mat and a set of dumbbells, so a stretch on the balcony at sunrise or a short workout before breakfast needs no planning. If you'd like company, ask your butler — someone who teaches yoga on the island can be arranged to visit for a private session. It isn't a hotel-run programme, just something the butler sets up on request. Either way, breakfast on the terrace afterwards is the usual reward.

breakfast on the balcony with morning saying

Breakfast Sayings

Breakfast comes with a short saying alongside it most mornings — quotes drawn from various African countries, printed on the card by your plate. Small, but it's a nice thing to read before the day gets going.

hidden dining spots in the garden

Preferred Seating & Flexible Meal Times

You can choose where you eat for every meal — breakfast on your balcony or one of the terraces with a sea view, a regular table in the restaurant, or somewhere more private if that's what you'd rather have. Meal times flex around your schedule too; tell your butler what works and the kitchen adjusts.

romantic dinner places with candles and lanterns

Romantic Dinner Spots

A handful of spots are set aside for a candlelit dinner on request — your terrace or balcony, a quiet corner of the garden, or the beach itself. Reserve one through your butler, or eat in the restaurant as usual — both are always on the table.

african fairy tales

Bedtime Stories

Each evening, room service leaves a new story on your bed — pulled from African folklore, rewritten short enough for a few minutes before lights out. Some are lighthearted, some more serious, and no two nights repeat the same one during a typical stay.

romantic open air cinema with popcorn

Open-Air Cinema

Blankets, cushions, and a screen under the stars — this is arranged through your butler for an extra charge, from a library of around 300 DVDs and downloaded titles, or ask for something on Netflix. It's open to every guest, not only Asili House (whose rooms have no in-room TV and use the cinema as their alternative). Popcorn comes with it, and it pairs well with a private dinner beforehand.

enjoying SUP and kayak in front of Matlai

SUP or Kayak

The hotel's stand-up paddleboards and kayaks are free to use, best at high tide when the channel in front of the hotel is deeper. Staff give a quick safety briefing and help you launch, whether you've done this before or not.

table games in Zatiny restaurant

Table Games

The lounges and the bar's game cabinet hold a mix of board and card games for guests of any age. If you want to try Bao — Zanzibar's own strategy game, played with seeds and a carved board — ask a butler to walk you through the rules.

table soccer and dart playing in Zatiny restaurant

Table Soccer & Darts

Table soccer and darts are set up for anyone who wants a bit of competition after dinner — nothing formal, just there when you want it.

butler serving meals on the beach of the Indian ocean

Beach & Pool Service

Wherever you've settled — the beach, the pool, your own terrace — a butler will bring drinks, snacks, or a full meal. It's the same service as the restaurant, just wherever you happen to be sitting.

bicycle tour in Michamvi

Bicycles

Bicycles are free to borrow for a ride along the beach or further out into the area. Ask a butler to get one ready — no booking needed, just some notice so a bike is free when you want it.

Stay seven nights or longer, and a few extra things are added in automatically:

foot massage in Bustani spa of Hotel Matlai

Voucher for a Foot or Head Massage at Bustani Spa

A voucher for a foot or head massage at Bustani Spa is included for stays of this length — book it whenever suits you during your trip.

aluminium bottles as for environment protection

Aluminium Drinking Bottles

Matlai doesn't sell or hand out plastic water bottles. Rooms come with refillable glass bottles filled from reusable water gallons, and for longer stays you're given an aluminium bottle to keep — useful on excursions, and something to take home afterwards.

shopping bags as a departure gift

A Gift at Departure

If you've stayed a while, or you're back for another visit, there's a small gift waiting for you on the way out — nothing large, just a way of saying the stay was noticed and appreciated.

None of this is why you'd book Matlai in the first place — that's the location and the villas. It's what tends to get mentioned afterwards, in the review, as the thing nobody expected.

Curious what's included on your dates? Check availability, or ask us directly before you book.
