Where to Eat in Zanzibar in Low Season (April & May)

April and May are Zanzibar's low season — quieter beaches, a more relaxed island, and noticeably lower prices. The honest trade-off nobody mentions upfront: through these two months, a good number of independent restaurants along the coast close for the season, for the same reasons any seasonal business does — fewer tourists, staff leave, and a natural point to do annual maintenance.

What Actually Closes, and What Doesn't

If your hotel has one small kitchen and you were planning to eat out most nights, low season can get inconvenient fast — especially away from Nungwi and Stone Town, where more places stay open year-round. On the east coast at Michamvi Pingwe, that's less of a problem: Zatiny, Matlai's restaurant, runs two kitchens — the beachfront Zatiny menu and Duyên, a Vietnamese menu cooked by Kim at the same tables — and since all Matlai stays are half board, dinner is included rather than something you need to plan around each evening.

One honest caveat about May specifically: Matlai is normally open through March and April, but the hotel usually closes for part of May, with dates announced in advance each year. If you're looking at May dates, ask us before booking flights and we'll tell you straight away whether we're open.

Eating at Zatiny and Duyên

Zatiny is beachfront dining with ocean views — fresh seafood, Swahili-influenced dishes, and a daily-changing chef's menu alongside the standing menu. Duyên is Kim's Vietnamese home cooking, served at the same restaurant and the same tables: any table can order from either menu, or both, in the same sitting. In low season, with fewer guests around, both feel noticeably more personal — quieter service, more attention per table.

Payment: Visa and Mastercard are accepted; American Express is not. Cash in USD or Tanzanian shillings works too.

Why Michamvi Pingwe Works Well in Low Season

Location matters more when the island thins out. Michamvi Pingwe stays genuinely pleasant through April and May:

  • peaceful beaches without crowds
  • the sandbank right in front of the coast, still there at low tide
  • calm, sheltered lagoon waters

Instead of a busy dining room every night, low season at Matlai tends to mean private table setups in the garden or by the beach on request, and more of the staff's attention per table — a relaxed lunch or a quiet dinner without the peak-season crowd.

Should You Visit in Low Season?

If you want fewer people, lower prices, and a more authentic feel to the island, April and May can be one of the better times to visit Zanzibar — as long as you've checked your specific dates against the hotel's usual May closure first. For what these months are actually like in more detail — the rain, the rates, the empty beach, and who should book June to October instead — see the honest case for March and April.
